Healthy Insight: smile with kiwifruit

Good mood and feelings of vitality are linked to diets with vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables. In this study, 167 women and men, aged 18 to 35, with low levels of vitamin C—less than 40 micromoles per liter of blood—took a placebo, 250 mg of vitamin C, or ate two fresh kiwifruit, per day.

After four weeks, vitamin C levels returned to normal in the vitamin C and kiwi groups. The kiwi group also reported improved mood and feelings of well-being both during and two weeks after the study, and ate less fat during the trial.

The vitamins, minerals, and fiber in kiwi appear to benefit the gut and help regulate mood.
